Free Advice Friday

Dear Kim,

I have been following your excellent advice and also understand you’ve added running to your repertoire of amazing abilities. I feel now is the perfect time to ask your opinion on how to handle a ‘noise’ that may sometimes squeak out from ‘behind the lower area’ when walking /running with others.

Thank you, Slightly Embarrassed Susan

Dear Slightly,

I’m not sure I understand your nicey-nice talk. Are you trying to say that farts emanate from your ass while you run? If so, I can help.

Here’s my advice: Shit your pants. You only have to shit your pants once, after that your friends will think nothing of a fart. Of course, they might be concerned that you’re going to shit your pants again, but if they make fun of you for that then they were never your friends to begin with. I’m a firm believer that laughing at someone for farting is funny but laughing at some one for shitting their pants is just plain cruel.

If you feel like this isn’t an option for you (ie. constipation, empty bowels, etc), I have a couple more alternatives.

1. Make it so people don’t want to run with you.

When I run I flail my arms and legs wildly. But don’t do it too wildly otherwise passersby will throw you to the ground and stick a belt in your mouth so you don’t bite off your tongue during your epileptic fit. In addition to my running style, I take Mr. Bojangles with me (when he isn’t busy licking his own ass). We look something like this…

Mr. Bojangles, just before he pulled my jacket off.

I found that this is usually enough to put people off.

2. Muffle the sound

There are two ways of doing this. Your first choice is to make a “Wahoo!” yell as you’re farting. Now this is a little tricky because you need to be aware that you’re about to fart in order to pull this off successfully. I’m convinced that all those people in my spin class yelling “yeah, baby!” “wooo!” and “c’mon!” are all just letting one rip. That’s why I always look disgusted when I’m in there.

*Do not use this technique in meditative yoga.

The other way of doing this is an actual physical muffling. I’ve experimented with this and I find that cotton balls and a little duct tape work really well. And the duct tape actually keeps your ass from jiggling so you look tighter and firmer. An added bonus.

I hope I was able to help you, Slightly. Just stay away from the beans, nobody likes a bean fart.

Kim

Dear Kim,

My kids have been asking for a pet for the last 2 years. I think they’re ready for the responsibility. What kind of animal do you think would make the best “first pet”?

Laurie in Pettingham, AL

Dear Laurie,

I understand your desire to have your children learn about the responsibility and sense of companionship that comes with pet ownership. Studies show that when a child cares for an animal it can help them to become a more empathetic and nurturing person in an otherwise cruel world. Just don’t get a bird. My bird Petey was a total dick.

Laurie, I’ve had newts, fish, crabs (fresh water, not pubic), iguanas…basically all sorts of aquarium pets and they’ve all had the same thing in common, they smell like ass. And not normal ass, the kind of ass that takes three bowls of all beef chili. Don’t do it.

And don’t be fooled by cute bunnies or rodents, they just leave little turds around the house which you will always think are spilled chocolate chips until you taste them.

We currently have a dog and a cat. What a mess. Mr. Bojangles has continual diarrhea flare ups which I believe is linked to him using the cat’s litter box like some kind of walk up sushi bar.

I swore I would never get another animal again. Then a couple months ago Ana was crying about wanting another pet. I kinda figured this was coming because she kept accidentally killing the ants I gave her. She was only trying to pet them.

The first and last time she would pet Timmy.

I got to thinking about what kind of pet would be best for our family and I that’s when I brought home Rickalick, our invisible dog. The kids didn’t buy it at first but then I explained to them “just because you don’t see the invisible fence doesn’t mean it’s not there” then I let them hold the dog collar and walk through it. They couldn’t argue with my logic.

Rickalick is great. He never barks. The kids can take him for walks off leash because he never leaves their side. They spend hours in the backyard throwing balls for him to chase (he doesn’t like to fetch). And late at night, he and I curl up with a glass of Cabernet and some cheese…and he doesn’t steal my damn food when I get up to pee (Mr. Bojangles, you suck).

Of course, continuously convincing the kids they have an invisible dog is not without some effort. At least once a week I have to bring dog poop into the house and put it on the carpet. “Bad Rickalick, bad dog”. Then I make one of the kids clean it up since it’s their pet. And once a year we take him to our vet who gives our invisible dog a very visible bill for wasting his time.

Having Rickalick is really starting to pay off because the kids in the neighborhood have been asking for their own invisible dog. So we’ve adopted some more dogs and have started a breeding center in our downstairs powder room, it’s called I.D.I.O.T.S. (Invisible Dog Institute Of Total Suckers). We’re hoping to have them weaned and potty trained by Christmas.

Rickalick with the neighborhood kids. We couldn’t get him to smile.

Laurie, I’ve enclosed an adoption form along with an outline of our fees. If you’re interested in an invisible dog for your family just mail it back in with a deposit, preferably a cashier’s check.

Good Luck,

Kim

Random Snippets

Here’s a random snippet from my life. Of course the term “interesting” is really dependent on how boring your day is so far. But we can all agree it’s random.

Once, I went a whole summer doing my own nails with one of those Acrylic Nail At Home Kits. They looked lumpy, bumpy, and god awful but it saved me a few bucks. Of course the quality of the materials was sub-par and as a result I kept shedding nail tips all over town. I didn’t mind that so much until it started to interfere with the two jobs I had that summer.

My first job was a shampoo girl at a hair salon. My acrylic nails would constantly lift at the cuticle and they always got stuck in a customer’s hair while I was washing out their perm. There’s nothing like being attached to the scalp of another person and needing 10 minutes to untangle your hands. Trust me when I tell you it’s awkward for everyone. At the time I blamed the perm solution for breaking down the glue and not the technician (me).

I eventually lost that job, not because of my little nail problem but because I never showed up for my 7 am shift until 11 am. And apparently “c’mon, it’s summer, relax” was an inappropriate response during our little “sit down”.

My second job was at Candy Kitchen. When a customer ordered candy we would use a tiny piece of tissue paper to reach in and grab it from the tub. Unfortunately, every time I pulled my hand out I was missing a nail..or nails. Normally I could locate and retrieve my nails quickly without anyone noticing. However, that summer I loved me some red nail polish and the customers, unfortunately, loved themselves some Red Swedish Fish. Needless to say, the digging through the red fish took a considerable amount of time and my problem soon became obvious to management. Turns out I was violating some kind of health code.

But I’m happy to say I didn’t get fired. Instead, I was instructed to wear latex gloves whenever I was working at the counter. Of course I was the only employee wearing them so customers probably thought I had scabies or something. Explains my short lines.

I actually ended up quitting that job when they wanted me to work on the 4th of July (Oh Hell No!). I had my friend call my manager and tell her that I got hit in the head with a boogie board while in the ocean untangling a dolphin from a tuna net.

“Sadly Kim can no longer properly calculate the weight of candy or count accurate change from a register. But she did save a dolphin’s life today so it wasn’t all for nothing. She did good. She did real good.”

I love and hate that this story is completely true.

The End

Last Night- My Power Outage Journal

The storm was approaching, the power went out,  and my journal began…

3:07 pm–  The power’s out and I kinda like it. Cutting off communication with the outside world  is just what this family needs to focus on one another and enjoy each other’s company. I’m going to snuggle with Ana and read her a book.

3:38 pm– I’ve read 18 books, shoot me now. By the time I got to book #7 I was just making shit up. God help me if she tells anyone about the time Jessie gave Buzz a “Woody”. I thought it was funny but I can see how it might look bad.

4:02 pm– Collin just got home from school and Brian came down from his upstairs office. I’m going to suggest we all hang out in the family room and maybe play games.

4:15 pm– Brian and I just argued over whether or not to order pizza.  He’s afraid the pizza guy will get stranded here during the storm and we’ll all be forced to put on pants and entertain him until it lets up.

4:18 pm – Get dressed bitches, I just ordered pizza!

4:26 pm– I can’t take it! Between the yelling, the balls to the head, and the god awful farting (who’s doing it?), I’m going to lose it!  I’m starting to get a headache from clenching my jaw.

4:29 pm – Turns out it’s Mr. Bojangles who’s been farting.  But quite honestly, his timing couldn’t be better. Every time he farts I claim it was me and excuse myself to the bathroom. I’ve been using the alone time to build a shrine, a memorial to my sanity. It sits next to the pedestal sink so everyone can pay their respects while they’re peeing.

Goodbye Sanity. You will be missed. Love, Me

4:32 pm– I’ve decided I can’t do this all night.  I’m currently scouting out possible hiding locations for myself come nightfall. I’m leaning towards the pantry.

4:34 pm– My god, all this family wants to do is eat. I scratched “pantry” off my list of hiding places.

4:36 pm– Using only a paper clip and the dry skin on my arm, I’ve inconspicuously written a list of items that I’ll need to survive through the night. It’s pretty bare bones.  I imagine this is what my camping list would look like if I was ever crazy enough to go camping.

Provisions

-A bottle of Cabernet from the Napa region

-A selection of cheeses (Gruyere, Stilton blue, an aged cheddar, and a herb Havarti)

-Crackers

-Corkscrew

-My Chocolate chip bag from Costco

-Water

-Bucket to pee in

4:38 pm – Ana keeps calling me “poopy stinkybutt”. Whatever. I’ll be gone soon enough. Come on darkness.

4:43 pm – it’s getting darker. Our pizza has arrived and I’ve eaten in preparation. I have a full belly and I’m feeling giddy.

4:46 pm – I’ve decided on the coat closet as this saves me from dragging down a pillow and blankets.

4:52 pm – All my supplies are in place. I realize it’s crucial that I take the necessary precautions to thwart any attempts to find me.  So far I’ve hidden all the C and D batteries that could be used to power their flashlights in case they orchestrate a witch hunt. I’ve even sprayed myself with Febreze so the dog can’t track me.

4:54 pm– In 6 minutes I’m going into the closet.  My euphoria has inspired me to write…

Darkness has finally fallen

and my memorial burns bright

buried in the winter coats

hidden from all sight

I happily pour my Cabernet

with a snow boot up my ass

I can’t hear your constant bitching

and to that I raise my glass.

-K.S.

4:59 pm – the power came back on. Goddamn it.

A Tip for Tuesday – Jewelry Cleaning

Cleaning Your Rings-

I have a great tip for removing dirt, hairspray, saliva, blood, etc., off of your rings. What? You say you don’t have blood on them? HAHAHA! If you have kids then you most definitely have traces of blood (and poop) on your jewelry. If you shined a black-light on your rings you’d vomit. Trust me.

Step 1.

The first thing you’ll want to do is soak your rings in alcohol to loosen the debris. I like to use Popov vodka. But if you don’t have Popov vodka (and you shouldn’t unless you live in a dorm) you can use Southern Comfort or Black Velvet Whiskey-basically any jagged alcohol capable of eating a hole through your bathtub.

*That was just an expression, you shouldn’t be bathing in any of that shit, you might go sterile.

Step 2.

After soaking your rings you’ll want to either rinse or lick them clean, depending on the time of day. I usually ask myself “Is it noon yet?”

*Tip within a tip- Pour the remaining alcohol on your kitchen sponge, countertops, or open wounds to kill nasty germs!

;

Step 3.

Put a pea- sized amount of toothpaste on a Sonic Care toothbrush. You can really use any vibrating toothbrush but I find my husband’s Sonic Care toothbrush works the best. The keyword here is “husband’s”. Don’t use your own, that’s disgusting!

He doesn’t have one? Then get him one for his birthday, Christmas, or Hanukkah. If you’re having trouble justifying the expense then I want you to think of it this way, you could buy a sonic jewelry cleaning machine for $199 or get a Sonic Care toothbrush that will keep your guy’s teeth white and make your diamonds sparkle for under $100. Now that’s a savings! It just makes good economical sense.

Now, I shouldn’t have to say this but…put the toothpaste on BEFORE turning on the toothbrush. Once you have the toothbrush humming make sure to work it into every nook and cranny of your ring. It’s important, however, that you don’t press too hard or the bristles will flatten out and 1) it won’t clean as well and 2) your husband will suspect you’ve done something bad with his toothbrush. Though he probably won’t suspect jewelry cleaning, he may assume crevice cleaning (which I’ll address in another post).

Step 4. Rinse the rings under warm running water. But make sure to close the sink drain before doing Step 4 otherwise this might turn into a $500 plumber bill.

Notice the badly needed manicure.

Voila! A shiny new ring like the day you got it from your sweetheart…or in my case, like the day you got it from the jeweler because you traded your old one in for a bigger one because you suck at sentiment. Sorry Brian.

(Brian, I was so kidding about all of this. I totally use my own toothbrush, because that’s the right thing to do.)

;

A summary of the supplies you’ll need. I highly recommend putting the vodka away after each use.
