Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! I review a white wine! Can you believe it?!

It’s that time of the week again! If you’ve been keeping up with me, you know that I’ve been reviewing only red wines lately because of my low carb diet. Well guess what? After my trips to Turks & Caicos and Madeira Beach, FL, my body is chock full of sugar and carbs! So I said to myself “Candy Ass (positive self-talk), you might as well indulge in a white wine before picking your fat ass off the floor (negative self-talk)and low-carbing it again”.

So that’s what I did.

Estancia Chardonnay, Monterey 2011 – $11.99

Winemaker’s Notes: “Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in our Pinnacles vineyard on the western flanks of the Gavilan Mountains in Monterey County. In this up-and-coming region, the cool climate and sandy, well-drained soils keep yields low and fruit intensity high. The cool Monterey climate accompanied by a long growing season produced a ripe, mouthfilling Chardonnay. Subtle oak accentuates bright fruit. A rich, fruity bouquet and soft, creamy texture of this Chardonnay result from combining the best attributes of barrel and tank fermentation.”

Kim’s Notes: “Oh, yeah! You won’t last long, my refreshing little friend.”

The moment this golden liquid (the color of straw, or diluted urine) touched my lips, I knew I would love it forever and ever. In fact, we’re getting married and he’s taking me to Monterey County for our honeymoon to see where he was born. What he doesn’t know is that I’m going to drink his whole damn family. Shhh.

On my first sip, I detected notes of pear, pineapple, vanilla, and butter. Mmm, it smelled delicious, almost like a warm perfume that I’d want to lick off my own neck. I’m actually wearing it right now, and I wish my tongue was longer.

By my third glass, I got out of bed, headed to the kitchen, and started thinking about which foods would pair well with my new love. Based on my limited pantry, here’s what I’ve come up with: popcorn, turkey jerky, Fig Newtons, croutons, cereal fruit bars, strawberry Pop Rocks, and salt & vinegar flavored crickets.

I’m just kidding guys…everyone know strawberries go better with Cabernet.

Can you please validate me by clicking this banner? Thanks!
PS- after you click the banner it’ll seem like nothing happened but trust me, you voted! and I’ll love you a little bit more…but not more than my wine. sorry.

Cheapo Wino Wednesday Review! If it’s a bad chardonnay, would you throw it away?

“I can do this, I can do this, I can do this” has been my mantra for the last 16 days, 8 hours, and 27 minutes. That’s right folks, I’m still cleansing my chemical riddled body and I haven’t had a drop of alcohol since I started…pay up bitches! The key is to have a husband that can’t wait to mock you for cracking- he’s good to me like that.

Anyway, I only have 3 more days to go…on Phase 1. That’s right, I said “Phase 1”. You’re probably all like “WTF?!”. Yup, I have a Phase 2…no sugar or starch for 3 weeks. But let’s cross that bridge when we come to it. *don’t worry, I will be drinking wine.

Anywho, my loss is your gain. Today, I have another awesome guest post, this time by another one of my very favorite bloggy friends, Dani Ryan from Cloudy, With a Chance of Wine ! Dani almost kills me with her posts…really, I sometimes choke on my cleansing lemon water from laughing so hard. It’s just that she has an uncanny ability to see the humor in the everydayness of being a mother, a wife, and a friend and she writes it in such a way that you can’t help but to go “Baahahahah!” Her posts make me happy! If you haven’t been to her site, you need to head over after reading this!

For those of you who don’t know me, I love few things more than a nice, cold glass of white.

And I should’ve named my blog Cloudy, With a Lot of Wine.

The trouble is, I’m a bit of a wine snob, and prefer vintages in the over $20 range.

But it’s not my fault.

I blame my in-laws.

I was perfectly happy drinking $5 boxed wine before they bought a home in wine country and started free-pouring expensive, oaky chardonnays and full-bodied cabernets down my throat.

OMG, I love those people . . .

So when Kim asked me to help with her Cheapo Wino Wednesday review, I was a little nervous.

Does she know how hard it is for me to handle Dora The Explorer’s voice when I have a wine headache?

But with Kim not drinking, I knew I had to take one for the team, so I threw my 2-year-old into her car seat and headed over to the liquor store.

As I was perusing the aisles for something under $15 that didn’t look like it would burn my esophagus, I noticed a familiar bottle staring at me:

Upon closer inspection, I realized this had been my “go to” wine in my 20s when I wanted to impress someone (new boyfriend, boss, university prof – you get the idea), and since it was within my allotted price range, I knew I had to try it again.

After reading the winemakers notes, I thought I had made a good decision:

–Internationally recognized as one of the best value-for-money wines available throughout the world –Renowned for consistency and quality –Combines easily with food, family, and friends

Of course, this last part is a moot point for me since I don’t like to mix my wine with friends (too chatty) and food (kills my buzz).

But I still had high hopes.

So once The Kid was in bed and The Hubs and I were comfortably sitting on the couch watching Downton Abbey (yes, we finally got sucked in), I started drinking.

Things got off to a good start, and I was beginning to think I would have enough commentary to write The Top 10 Reasons Bin 65 is My New Drug of Choice:

1. It has a screw top, so I didn’t have to waste any of my precious drinking time farting around with a corkscrew.

2. It’s very oaky.

3. It’s not too sweet or fruity, so my taste buds didn’t scream “WINE HANGOVER!” with each sip.

4. After 5 sips, I still didn’t have the overwhelming urge to pop an antacid.

5. At half the price I usually pay for wine, I realized I’d have much more disposable income to spend on important things. Like shoes.

As I was day-dreaming about Jimmy Choo, I poured myself another glass.

And then it happened.

I started feeling that familiar stinging in the back of my throat, my stomach started burning, and I felt myself starting to dehydrate.

So I did what any normal person would do.

I poured that glass down the drain and reached for the good stuff:

Oh well. I never have occasion to wear Jimmy Choo shoes anyway . . .

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Chardonnay on the cheap!

2011 Cupcake Vineyards Chardonnay $10.99

Wine Maker’s Notes:

We work hard to bring you the biggest, richest Chardonnay from California’s desirable Central Coast, where the sun drenched grapes create full and elegantly-textured wines. Decadent levels of butter, cream, bright citrus and vanilla melt into a balance of oak and subtle spice. In other words: Delicious. Serve chilled with crab cakes, seared Ahi tuna on waffle crackers or fresh-baked French bread and cheese.

Kim’s Notes: “Hey sexy, what’s a fine wine like you doing in a budget like mine?”

Dear Cupcake Vineyards,

First your yummy Cabernet, now this seductress?! It has everything I look for in a Chardonnay wine, it was buttery, oaky, and toasty. And while it was served at a temperature that could make nipples hard, it blanketed my tongue in a soft warmth that tucked me in and said “there, there, Kim, let me make it all better.”- and it did, dear Cupcake Vineyards, it did.

Each sip I took was like eating a tiny little pineapple upside down cake with all its creamy goodness, and I ate that cake SO HARD!

I have to say, it’s obvious to me that your winemakers are asking themselves the question “WWKD?” and for that, I am eternally grateful. And I hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of ordering some of those rubber “cause” bracelets to help remind them of their end goal.

WWKD?

I selected hot pink because it’s my favorite color and I think it fits in nicely with the whole “cupcake” theme you have going on, but I’m open to suggestions. In order to finalize my order, I’ll just need an employee count and a check to cover the costs (what? it’s a tax write-off for you).

Really, Cupcake, I want to thank you for creating wonderful wines at affordable prices, there are few combinations that turn me on more. And if you don’t know it already, I love you -but if you want to send me some free bottles, I could always love you a little bit more.

I look forward to trying and reviewing some of the other varieties that you’ve carefully crafted for my palate.

Yours truly,

Kim

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday

Today’s wine review is a white wine from the Washington region (gasp!). I bet you thought I only drank red. Well that’s not true, my friend.  Think of me as a swinger of the wine world- I have most definitely pledged my love to red, but a little white here and there keeps things exciting. *note- we are not swingers, so you and your husband keep that kookiness at your house.

2010 Columbia Valley Grand Estates Chardonnay – $12.99

Wine Makers’s Notes: “The Grand Estates Chardonnay opens with bright fruit aromas of apple and pear which harmonize gracefully with signature notes of caramelized sugar and butterscotch. Ripe fruit flavors are bolstered by lively acidity, yet balanced deftly with a subtle creaminess. The striking combination of rich flavors, ample body and refreshing finish make this wine a natural pairing for a wide array of foods.”

Wine Spectator Notes: “Polished, lively and refined, with pretty white peach, floral and oatmeal notes that come together smoothly and linger on the finish. Drink now through 2015.”   89 Points.

Kim’s Notes: “Burrrrrrp”

This stuff is easy to guzzle, creating air bubbles in my belly! nom nom nom…

Ok, my review…It opens with a slight crispness of pear and pineapple but ends with a subtle warmness, almost like the pears have been tossed in butter and the pineapples were used by cute little squirrels to polish their oak tree homes to a nice shine. Yeah, exactly like that.

and that’s how “Bust-A-Nut” Winery was born.

I have to agree with the winemaker, this wine pairs well with quite an array of foods.  So far I’ve tried it with cereal, Fig Newtons, chocolate chips from the bag, sour cream & onion chips, and those little mints they serve at my car dealership… all delish!

This wine is perfect to drink at brunches, play dates, prior to dental appointments, therapy appointments, etc.  To be honest, it’s really ideal for any daytime drinking situation.

Buy some and drink it today…no really today…before 5pm.

Psst…Please, please, please, click the little circle below and vote for me!  The contest ends today.  It only takes a sec.  If you do, I’ll be your best friend forever and ever (sorry Joanne, but I got goals to meet).  Thank you!
