The Mushroom Festival – Out of the crap and into the light.

We went to the Mushroom festival yesterday because…well, because that’s just what you do in these parts. Why couldn’t I live in wine or cocoa bean country? This is what I ask myself every time I stand in line buying a 5 lb box of portobellos for a nickel.

Anyway, it was a beautiful day to walk around and appreciate the under appreciated and often misunderstood mushroom. Though I have to admit, I spent most of my time walking around and wondering why alcoholic beverages weren’t being served. What I would have given for a Crimini Martini or a Button mushroom soaked in vodka.  I’m sure my grandmother has a recipe for that last one.

While there wasn’t much to do, I had a lot of fun saying cheesy things like “Hey Collin, you’re a fungi!”, “Ana’s as cute as a button!”, “Scoot over, I don’t have mushroom” and my personal fave “Where’s the bathroom? I need to take a shiitake!” God, I crack me up! I was high fiving myself left and right. I’m sure I embarrassed everyone else.

I saw the food truck for The Creamery (a local ice cream farm) and thought about getting some ice cream but I didn’t because I need to work off some of this summer poundage.  In hindsight though, I probably should have- we haven’t had their ice cream since “the incident” and I’m not sure if I’ll ever return to the farm.  Brian thinks I’m overreacting.  Maybe I’ll fill you in on “the incident” tomorrow, it’s much too layered to go into right now.

Of course it wouldn’t have been a festival without a giant mushroom walking around but Ana could give a rat’s ass. She was, however, very excited when she saw Google’s Android mascot.

She’s a marketer’s dream. There was a person inside the inflated costume and he stood there waving at everyone passing by. She was fascinated by his inflatedness and pulled me in his direction so she could say hi. He was a chipper little fella. Unfortunately, the next time we saw him he was being repeatedly punched by a gang of 5 year olds who were also fascinated with his inflated costume. Parents were nearby laughing and placing bets on which kid would deflate him first.  I have to say, that Android was no wuss, he was swinging back.  Wisely, he tried to make his retaliation look playful by dancing while he swung, but he made pretty good contact with a couple of heads. I took the opportunity to explain “mob mentality” to my kids. This made Ana very sad and slightly frightened, but Collin was too busy cheering to hear a word I said.

Overall, we didn’t stay long, maybe a couple of hours. But really, how much mushroom stuff does any one person need to see? It’s not like it was the Oatmeal Festival or anything- I hear that’s 3 days long, and rightfully so. The Bloggess tweeted about its heartiness here.

On the way out I snagged a free bag of Smartfood’s newest chip flavor, Fetal.

Mmm, placenta never tasted so good!

But when I tasted one I nearly spit it out. It didn’t taste anything like fetal!  Let me ask you this – have you ever gulped your beer, then realized you just drank from the cup your friends have been using as an ashtray?  You won’t die but it definitely wasn’t what you were expecting, right? Well that’s what happened. I was expecting Fetal and instead I got Feta Herb.

Yuk! Not even a hint of uterus:(

Apparently I misread the wrinkled bag. Feta herb? What kind of chip flavor is that? Dreadful.

When we got home Brian said, “Those chips smell like feet!” and with some kind of twisted hopefulness I said, “Baby feet?”

“No more poopy talk!” – Brian

Brian asked me if all my posts were going to be about poop (he cringes when I write the word SHIT). I had to really think about that one.   As a stay at home mom of two young kids, a dog, and two cats, it seems my days are spent either telling someone where to poop, when to poop, or how to poop. And then that’s usually followed by cleaning up the poop. It’s not very glamorous but not everything worthwhile is.

So I told him that we need to get out today and do some interesting stuff. Maybe the outside world will provide me with more than bodily functions to reflect upon. Where are we going and what are we doing you ask? We’re going to a Mushroom Festival!  Yeah, I know.

While there, we will take a tour of a working mushroom farm and our guide will talk in detail about growing mushrooms. And what do you suppose mushrooms are grown in? C’mon, guess,… drum roll…ready for it?…SHIT poop!  Are you kidding me?!?

I can’t get away from the stuff so I’m just going to embrace it (not literally, you’re disgusting). Who knows, maybe I’ll learn how to use our own natural poop resources to create a small backyard mushroom garden.  Wouldn’t it be fabulous if one day you came to our house for dinner and I proudly served you our family’s “special” mushrooms. They’d be completely organic (except for the growth hormones), free from pesticides (we’d use natural dog urine), and I guarantee they’d have a sweetness to them unlike any other (our kids eat a lot of pop-tarts). It’s kind of like “farm to table” dining.Yum.

It’s really a lovely family project when every member has something to contribute!

An apology to our old neighbors…

Question…what does this look like?

Hmmm

Did you say dog shit, crap, or poop?  That’s what I thought too.

Turns out it’s not. And this is where my apology comes in…

Dear Old Neighbor,

Many years ago, when we first moved in, I walked barefoot into your backyard to retrieve a pair of underwear that had been flung there by either our son or our dog, Mr.Bojangles. It’s true, we rarely make a good first impression.  As I quietly crept over, hoping you wouldn’t see me and realize I wasn’t wearing a bra, I felt tiny little logs under my feet. I looked down and to my horror…I was walking on and surrounded by dog shit! Shit was everywhere in your yard!  My god, is that why they call them ‘Shit’zus?

I grabbed my undies and high tailed it out of there, stifling the vomit that was threatening to rise into my mouth.  I agree, I have a flair for the dramatic.

When I went inside to boil my feet, I noticed that the dog crap didn’t smell at all. Weird yes, but I figured you must have put your dog on some special organic diet. After all, Snookems had her own closet filled with designer doggy gowns and her collar was studded with red Swarovski Crystals that matched her nail polish to a “T”, so the whole ‘having a way to make her poop not smell’ seemed totally plausible. That way you could dress her up, prance her around, and tell people “her shit don’t stink” and mean it both literally and figuratively. I thought it was disturbingly brilliant!

Anyway, I told my family that they could not, under any circumstances, walk onto your lawn. They could use your driveway and your walkway but if their ball rolled onto your grass they were to, “consider it a loss and think of it as an incentive to aim better next time.”

And that is how we lived for years until you moved. You probably thought we were polite neighbors who respected your privacy and property line. And I would love for you to continue thinking that but the truth is, we didn’t want to walk into your shitty yard.

Fast forward to today. The lawn company we hired knocked on my door and said they were going to aerate our grass. I figured since the lawn is outdoors it probably gets plenty of air already. This was just another money making gimmick by big corporate America and they obviously had me pegged for a schmuck. Normally I would have stood there and debated the necessity of this service but, once again, I was bra-less and could do little more than peek my head around the door and say “Sounds good. Bye now.”

Around dinner time I took Mr.Bojangles to go potty  (you remember Mr. B, right? He always peed on your patio. Sorry again about that.) anyway, I took him potty and suddenly I was walking on tons and tons of shit! It was like an awful episode of Lassie, that damn Snookems must have found her way back! I called for her and called for her to no avail. Then I noticed tons of holes in the ground, they were the same size as the turds. And that’s when things started to click.

I rushed inside and Googled “air rating”, then smarty pants Google changed it to “aerating” and bingo! I was never walking on dog poop, I was walking on dirt! I felt an immediate sense of relief, stupidity, and guilt all at the same time.

I apologize, you will never again be referred to as our “Shitty” neighbors. By the way, you were lovely people, the “Shitty” part was only in reference to your yard.

Please send Snookems our apologies. We enclosed a small gift for her, “Bitch N Heat” eau de toilette, by Pupfume Inc.

Sincerely,

One Classy Family

Free Advice Friday – Incontinence?

Dear Kim,

When I read your blog I laugh so hard that I pee my pants. In Fact, I pee my pants almost every time I laugh and it’s embarrassing. Do you have any advice?

Pees With Glee, Urineville, FL

Dear Pee,

Do you mind if I call you Pee? I was so flattered to hear that my blog makes you laugh so hard that you pee your pants, but then you added the part about you peeing at anything- basically you gave me a compliment then took it away. That was pretty insensitive. But because I’m such a great person, I’ll help you with your situation anyway.

I too suffer from laughter incontinence…also coughing incontinence, sneezing incontinence, and flatulence. But I’m not going to address the latter.

A little about me. My incontinence developed shortly after giving birth to my son. He was 3 weeks late and approximately the size of a very small man. When he vacated my womb he wore a Member’s Only jacket, looked around for his luggage, and walked out of the delivery room complaining of cramped traveling quarters. I was really pissed considering he had just spent the last two weeks punching my bladder like he was in a “to the death” cage match. Ungrateful SOB.

Needless to say, my bladder was never the same after that. In fact, having that baby changed the course of my life forever, it ended my career as a professional Trampolinist (Gasp!). That’s right Pee, I had my sights set on the 2008 summer Olympics and I believe I would have brought home the Gold! Sadly, I was told I couldn’t participate because the adult diapers I wore while “tramping” were considered a violation of the team’s regulation uniform. Apparently, the outline of the Depends through my unitard proved too much of a distraction for the judges. I tried suggesting that I wear a “Heavy Flow” Maxi Pad as a compromise. They refused my appeal but granted me permission to continue competing on the amateur circuit. Amateur?! Ha!

“No thank you, Team USA. You’ll hear from my lawyer!”

Back to you Pee- there are really only a few suggestions I can offer:

1. Depends or Maxi Pads as previously mentioned. Though I don’t recommend you wear them swimming. I did this once and blew up like a provoked Puffer fish. And they’ll cause the leg holes on your bathing suit to sag open when you exit the pool. Embarrassing.

2. Cross your legs and hold your vajayjay. This works for my daughter but I don’t think it would be socially acceptable among your friends and family. If it is, then you need new friends and to put a respectable distance between you and your family.

3. Whenever you’re about to laugh think of something sad to counter it. I think about grape crops dying or fires in the desert destroying all the Agave plants or dogs that are forced to wear doggie rain boots. Wait, strike that last one…thinking about those dogs trying to walk in those stupid boots just made me laugh.

4. Urinate every 5 minutes. An empty bladder is a safe bladder. I have a friend that keeps a Princess Potty in her minivan at all times – and it plays “Zippity Do Da” while you pee. But she recommends emptying it before you drive off, when the pee sloshes around the music keeps playing. You can only hear so much “Zippity Do Da” before you’ll want to back your car into a lightpost just to SHUT IT UP.

Why bother holding it?

5. Just pee! There is nothing more rewarding than saying something funny then watching the urine pour down your friend’s leg. It’s truly a compliment and a bonding moment for you both. Just carry extra clothes in your purse.

Pee, I hope I was able to give you some worthwhile advice. Check in with me soon and let me know how things are going. And remember…with me, urine good hands! (oh shit, I think I just peed a little on that one)

Sincerely,

Kim
