Free Advice Friday- anger management

Dear Most Brilliant Mom Ever,

How do I get myself to stop freaking out in front of my kids? And by freaking out I mean..totally screaming SO loud and scaring the children into tears while losing my voice and making my face go numb.

Please advise,

Mom of 2 Crazies.

Dear Crazy,

The most “brilliant mom ever”? Wow! Thanks for the undeserved compliment, unfortunately it  won’t make my advice any better. Sorry. But it just so happens Crazy, that your question falls right in my wheelhouse.

Did you know that I once taught an anger management class at the nearby community center? I know what you’re thinking, “A mother, wife, professional trampolinist, Little Miss Delaware 1979, rescuer of dolphins, shampooist…is there anything she can’t do?” Yes Crazy, I can’t remember the passwords to any of my accounts: email, bank, computer login, etc.  Instead, I always choose the “forgot your password?” button. It’s an inefficient way to live.

Anyway, I’m proud to say my Anger Management classes were popular and well attended by members of my community.  Of course, most of them were there through a court order, but I like to think that they really enjoyed the program. We did a lot of singing (“If You’re Happy and You Know It” was popular), role playing, and expressing our feelings through macaroni art.  I saw my fair share of macaroni middle fingers.

I ran the classes for about 3 weeks before it was “suggested” by my boss that I look for employment elsewhere.  He said I became too angry when students missed my class. Damn right! How would he feel if he had to skip the ending of One Life to Live every Wednesday only to find that some “angry ass” (as I called my students) didn’t bother to show?

Well, this one time I had to leave my house minutes before finding out if Cord was the father of Tina’s baby…and goddamn it if there weren’t 3 no-shows to class! WTF?!  I got so pissed that I started throwing those metal folding chairs all around the room while my students stood in the corner egging me on. I think they took some sick pleasure from it.  In fact, had I not crossed the line and flipped over the complimentary Coffee & Donut table, they probably wouldn’t have ratted me out.

I tried reasoning with my boss, but apparently my “Do as I say, not as I do” philosophy was not embraced by the Sussex County Community Center.

This, of course, was all pre-kids.  I knew that if I wanted to be the best mother ever, I needed to stop drinking, swearing, and throwing chairs.  I can help you with the throwing chairs part.

Here are a couple tricks I use to control my frustration and anger level…

You need a panic room

Think of this panic room as a “time out” for you, an escape if you will. Just before you’re about to go bat shit, I want you to quickly and quietly flee to this room for your safety and the safety of those in the house.

I realize that it’s hard to find a house with a panic room (unless you buy one of my old homes) but don’t worry, you can create one on a budget.

I took an ordinary spare bedroom and covered the walls and floors with those foamy egg crates meant for the bed, this absorbs my screaming and protects me from the screaming of my children.  I then added a second layer of goose down comforters because they are soft, warm, and absorb my tears (unlike poly-fill). You’ll also want to add an additional lock on the inside of your door, maybe a deadbolt.  It’s been my experience that your children can open the regular lock by inserting a tiny screwdriver or a bobby pin from Baby Hathaway’s hair into the doorknob.

Once you have the foundation for your room set you need to go about filling it with things that make you happy and/or calm you down. My panic room is filled with food and beverages that make me feel indulgent and occasionally buzzed.  In addition, I leave inspiration notes to myself all around the room. You can either hand write these notes or go to a website that sells motivational posters and purchase some.  It really depends on your decorative budget.  I like www.successories.com for my posters as it allows you to narrow down the choices through categories.  I always go right to the “WTF? This Isn’t What I Signed Up For!” section.

Here’s one corner of my room:

I pipe in Enya because it mimics the crying of my soul.

Displaced Aggression

This involves finding something that you can take your anger out on without the cops or Family Services coming to your home.  It could be something as simple as kickboxing, or digging a grave in the backyard to bury your sanity.  It’s a very personal choice.  I like to do something a little more sadistic… Look at this before and after pic:

This plant thought it was going to a good home.

It was wrong.

I am the plant torturer.  I buy the plant and then… if I’m having a good day I water it, if I’m having a bad day then I don’t.  I think you can tell by the pics how the beginning of the school year has been going.

Tip: If I’m really pissed off I leave the watering jug next to plant where it can see it, and running my fingers up and down the handle I say “It sure is hot out here, I bet some water would feel refreshing.” and then…and here’s the best part…I pour the water onto the asphalt next to the plant and say “Oops! Darn that’s all the water I had. That’s a shame” – then I make a sad face and leave! I just f-ing leave! It’s like the opposite of waterboarding.  I could probably work for the CIA if I didn’t have such loose lips.

Crazy, I hope I gave you some ideas that you can use.  Just remember, they’ll only be at home until they’re 18 and then again at 35 when they get a divorce, so you’ll have 17 years without all the bullshit soon enough.

A Letter to My Local Bank, on Behalf of my Dog

Dear WSFS,

Back in July I heard that you would be holding a Pet Contest during the month of September. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for my dog, Mr. Bojangles, to shine.

Over the last few years he’s worked really hard to totally transform himself from the inside out. He was once overweight and prone to bite Girl Scouts but now, through therapy and discipline, he’s slim, happy, and welcomes small children bearing Thin Mints.   One day I said to myself “He’s ready to debut the new Bojangles and leave his transgressions behind”. It was later that evening that I heard of your contest. Fate had delivered.

We began work immediately.  As a former Little Miss Delaware 1979, I’m familiar with the dedication and persistence it takes to win. And Mr. Bojangles, a working breed, was up for the challenge.

I made an appointment with the top groomer in town. I had Bo’s nails trimmed, his coat conditioned, and his anal glands expressed twice (once because he needed it and a second time because he seemed to enjoy it).

After that it was off to the stylist to pick out just the right looks for the swimwear, evening wear, and talent portion of the contest. It took furever (get it?) to find just the right blue to match his eyes.

For the past 4 weeks we have been working intensely on his talent. Initially I was going to have him sing “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dione (it’s a total tear jerker) but as it turns out, Mr. B is capable of only hearing high pitches, not singing them.

“…whereeever you arrree…”

So instead we decided to focus on something he’s naturally good at. It was his idea to walk onto the stage, impressively fill 5 water glasses with varying heights of urine, and then tap the tune  “God Bless America” using a spoon he’d hold in his mouth. He’s a very talented and ambitious dog but rehearsals have been a bit of a mess.

I estimate that we have easily invested hundreds of dollars and tens of hours into preparing for this contest. So you can imagine my shock and anger when I received the official rules and guidelines which basically stated “submit a lousy picture and we’ll let you know if your pet won in one of three categories, blah, blah, blah”.

Are you kidding me???  No talent competition, interviews, or opportunities to strike a pose? How are you able to determine which dog is the “Best in Show”, “Most Personality”, or “Best with Kids”  by a simple picture? Maybe that pic of him biting the Girl Scout will look like he’s giving her a real deep kiss and he could win the “Best With Kids” category. Ha! I’d love to see Troop 357’s reaction when I mail them a copy of that congratulatory letter!

I finally broke the news to Mr.Bojangles last night over Mai Tai’s.  At first, it didn’t quite register, then he appeared confused…

Come again?

Whatcha talking about Willis?

Finally it sunk in that he just wasted the past three months of his life (2 dog years) preparing for a 1 shot photo contest. We both knew that one submission of a dachshund  wearing a stupid hot dog costume could ruin everything he’s worked for. He lost it! He started tearing my couch cushion apart!

His anger was contagious!

I’ve never seen him like that, well except every Friday when the Fed-ex man delivers my Keurig K-cups.

Today he asked me to submit this photo of him in a grassy meadow (I didn’t want to do it but he insisted):

I got your ‘Best in Show’ right here!

Please notify us if he’s a winner.

Thank you,

Kim S.

Confessions to my children.

-I don’t like sharing my water bottle with you. You put your lips over the whole opening and when you hand it back to me you’re still connected to it by spittle and there’s pieces of food floating in it. It’s disgusting.

-It was us, your mother and father, who bought you the expensive train table, DSi, Sony Playstation, and vacation to Disney- not Santa. And we want some damn gratitude!

-Sometimes I want to skip the whole bedtime routine. I once peed in the backyard while waiting for the babysitter to put you to bed. I sat on the deck and didn’t come in until she texted me you were asleep.

-Sometimes it grosses me out to hold your hand because I know that you were probably just picking your nose.

-I don’t really “go poopy” 5 times a day. I’m most likely in the bathroom reading Vogue, Cosmo, or Better Homes and Garden while making grunting noises.

-It was me, not that gang of squirrels, that ate your Cheddar Goldfish while you were on the swings. And squirrels can’t shoot acorns from their asses as a form of intimidation, I made that up too.

-The park wasn’t closed for slide resurfacing. I just wanted to go home and take my bra and tight jeans off.

-We really do miss you while we’re on vacation, but just at the very end. During the beginning and middle we’re feeling pretty good.

-Yeah… I knew that vaccine shot was going to hurt. “It’ll feel like a mosquito bite” was total BS so I could get you through the door without making a scene.

-Sometimes I prefer the company of the dog because, even though his breath smells like fish (why?), I never get the feeling that he’s deliberately trying to piss me off. Oh, and he and I sometimes talk about you. It’s his opinion that I should try crate training, the fact that you still occasionally crap your pants disgusts him.

-Being a mother is the most difficult, challenging, and exhausting thing I have ever done in my entire life. But at the same time, you are the the most wonderful and amazing person that’s ever happened to me. There is not one moment spent with you that I would trade for all the gold in the world…except maybe that time you threw up in my face.

What’s your confession? I promise not to tell them until they have children of their own.

Tips for Tuesday – Never argue with your children over clothes again! Here’s how…

Up until last week, this is how my mornings would start…

(take a deep breath and click the link)

Every Damn Morning

I’m sorry if that video was sideways…it was before my coffee.

I don’t know if you have this problem but I’m sick of fighting over clothes with my daughter!  Getting her dressed every morning ruins my day before it ever begins.  And I’m pissed that I’ve spent so much money on things she won’t even wear because they itch, have annoying tags, they’re too long, too short, too tight, or too pink.  How is something too damn pink???

A friend of mine jokingly (I think) suggested throwing our kids clothes out of the car window, leaving them with nothing to wear. So I tried it.

Here’s today’s tip: Throw that shit out!

I think someone ran over Hello Kitty…that’s a shame.

Sure, you could donate the clothes to Goodwill but there’s something about throwing them out of a car window at 50mph that says, “I’m a crazy bitch, do you really want to mess with me?!!”  And isn’t that the kind of respect you deserve?

I told Ana that I wasn’t going to spend another dime on clothes or shoes until she learned to appreciate what she had (which at this point was nothing).  So we looked around the house…

Introducing a few styles from my new fashion line, My-Mom-is-F-ing-Crazy Couture.  (I thought about using the real “F” word but I wanted to keep it family friendly)

The “Paper Not Plastic” dress

Now here’s an everyday dress that’s sure to please.  It’s quite a juxtaposition- the brown bag says “I’m down to earth” while the heart design and ribbon ties say “but I’m a girly-girl too”. Don’t put this preschooler in a box!  That last part was inspired by her actually begging me not to dress her in a box. She’s my muse!

The “What’s Black, White, & Read all Over?”…You are!

She’s well read.

This dress is perfect for going to the DMV, the doctor’s office, the grocery store, basically anywhere with long lines or waits. It has crossword and sudoku puzzles on the front and horoscopes on the back, it will keep the family entertained for hours.  Pair this dress with Pop Tart box shoes to coordinate with the blue Painter’s Tape belt, gorgeous!

*Ironically, I noticed Ana’s horoscope said “You tend to see things in black or white.”

The “Bow Wow Wow!” Dress

This dress was designed for special occasions with its shiny surface and festive colors!  And what little girl doesn’t love doggies?  I chose to accent it with an aqua ribbon to bring out the blue in her eyes.  She’s wearing this for her school pictures. I’ll send you a wallet size.

Do you know, this morning, Collin had the nerve to complain about his track pants making a swishing sound. All I had to do was point to his sister wearing her dog food dress and he shut up and left the room.  That’s how you know it’s working.

Addendum:  Of course I didn’t really throw out my daughter’s clothes.  But guess what, that photos with the clothes scattered everywhere was not staged! That means some other frustrated mom did.  Hey, I get it lady, I get it.
